Photo Licensing

Photo licensing is usually on a one-time, non-exclusive basis per image. We do offer discounts for collections of five or more images. Most images are licensed on a rights-managed basis. Occasionally, we make royalty-free offerings. Licensing fees are generally based on size of use, frequency and/or duration of licensing term, number of expected views (print run or web), type of use (web, editorial, corporate, etc.), among other factors. You've heard it too many times to count—"an image is worth a thousand words." Let us help you present a beautiful image to the world.

Once we agree to a licensing fee, we will send you an invoice, which can be paid using the paypal link below. Once we received payment, depending upon size of high resolution image, we will send via email (if less than 10MB) or upload to our FTP site and email you download instructions.

Books and Publications

I'm the author of 17 books including senior author of three Peterson field guides—A Field Guide Medicinal Plants and Herbs: Eastern North America (2nd ed., 2000 with Jim Duke), Venomous Animals and Poisonous Plants of North America (1994, with the late Roger Caras) and A Field Guide to Medicinal Plants and Herbs: Western North America (with Christopher Hobbs). My first National Geographic title, A Desk Reference to Nature's Medicine (2006, with Rebecca Johnson), was published by the National Geographic Books in 2006.  In 2007 the book was named  a "Best of Reference" by the New York Public Library. In 2010 I collaborated on another title National Geographic Guide to Medicine Herbs (with Rebecca L. Johnson, Tieraona Low Dog, M.D. & David Kiefer, M.D.; Photographs by Steven Foster, with a Foreword by Andrew Weil, M.D). See our books pages.

When you need a high resolution file, we will send as an email attachment, if appropriate, or for large files, we will upload the image(s) to our FTP site.

About Steven Foster

Steven Foster

I have had the pleasure of working in the herbal field for thirty seven years, beginning in 1974 at the Sabbathday Lake Maine Shaker Community's Herb Department, America's oldest herb business dating to 1799 (see Shaker herb galleries in links to the left). On my first day on the job one of the sisters asked me to dig burdock root, a tea of which was used to treat a skin condition. During my four years at the Shaker Herb Department, I established 3 acres of production herb gardens and produced over fifty products. Everything I do now, I started during that time from age 17-21, including growing herbs, writing, lecturing and photography. Part of my job was to shadow visiting photographers working on assigment for various magazines and periodicals while they were in the museum or community. I learned photography by watching some of the world's best photographers at work.

I love plants and sharing information and imagery about the human experience with medicinal and aromatic plants. My passion for photography has taken me around the world, not only photographing plants, but a wide variety of additional subjects. See the links in the column just left for galleries of everything from the pyramids to waterfalls, some of which are featured in the rotating banner at the top of the page.

The beautiful Victorian spa retreat, Eureka Springs, Arkansas in the heart of the Ozarks is where I make my home.
