Horsechestnut commonly thought to be of European origin is native to Asia Minor. It was introduced into western Europe about 1576. Horsechestnut extracts (primarily from the seeds) are used in modern phytomedicine to help improve vascular resistance to damage and reduce capillary-wall permeability for the topical treatment of bruises, sprains and contusions. In addition, standardized oral dosage forms are used in chronic venous insufficiency, reducing leg edema, and subjective symptoms such as a feeling of heaviness in the legs, night-time calf muscle spasms, itching, swelling, and improved vascular tone.
