Angelica gigas is grown as an ornamental in Western horticulture sporting bold purple-red flowers. It is found in forest and grasslands in northeast China, the Korean peninsula, and Japan. The root is traditionally used for the treatment of anemia and women's diseases. Its chemistry and pharmacological activity have been well defined and includes antiplatelet aggregation activity for nodakenin.
