Bacopa monnieri, madukaparni, Herpestis monniera, herb-of-grace, Indian pennywort, water hyssop, brahmi, among other names, is an important herb in Ayurvedic traditions believed to help improve memory. Among the confirmed activities are anxiolytic, antioxidant, and antidepressant activity. It also has antimicrobial activity against H. pylori infections hence an antiulcer effect. This moist soil-loving plant is not restricted to India, but is naturalized and weedy in many parts of the world including the southern United States. Formerly placed in the Scrophulariaceae, it is now placed in the Plantaginaceae.
