As one of the most widely-prescirbed medicinal plant products in Europe, Gingko leaf extracts, are used clinically for heart disease, eye ailments, ringing in the ears, cerebral and peripheral vascular insufficiency, injuries involving brain trauma, dementias, short-term memory improvement, cognitive disorders secondary to depression, vertigo, and various conditions associated with senility. Researchers have shown that a total extract from ginkgo leaves is active, not just a single isolated component. A standardized leaf extract has been found to be beneficial in diseases involving vascular, rheological, metabolic and immunological functions. More than 250 pharmacological and clinical studies have been published in the last two decades, the vast majority using a complex standardized extract of the dried leaves, known as EGb 761. Produced by a German/French consortium, the extract is standardized to 24 percent flavone glycosides.
