Lavandula angustifolia, English Lavender is one of the most appreciated of fragrant herbs. Lavender oils are used as fragrance in pharmaceutical preparations and in cosmetic creams, lotions, soaps, perfumes, and colognes. Lavender has a steady tradition of medicinal use since the time of Dioscorides, the first century Greek naturalist. It possesses tonic, stimulant, antispasmodic, carminative, sedative, stomachic, and diuretic qualities. In folk traditions lavender has been used for nervous tension headaches, insomnia, neuralgia and other ailments. Lavender tea, oil, or inhalants have been used for headaches, neuralgia, migraines, muscle spasms, rheumatism, and other ailments.
