Photos of Lobelia cardinalis, Cardinal flower.
Native groups used root of cardinal flower for stomach troubles, to expel worms; leaf tea for fevers, rheumatism, colds; externally root tea for hard-to-heal sores; leaf poultice for headaches. Used as a ceremonial herb, tossing dried leaves toward a storm to reduce winds; also strewn for last rites. Tea of the crushed roots used as a face wash to attract the opposite sex. Both root and flowers used in love charms. Historically this plant was considered a substitute for Lobelia or Indian-tobacco.
