Cultivated for hundreds of years in pre-conquest Mexico, it is mentioned in the Badianus Manuscript - the Aztec Herbal of 1552. Still used as a medicinal plant in Mexico, and widely in the Middle East. Cultivated as an ornamental flower and herb around the world. One of the world's most common and familiar garden plants.
