Before marketing hype in the middle 1990s so-called goji berry was available in herb products under less exotic names such as Lycium, Chinese wolfberry, Chinese boxthorn, or Chinese matrimony vine. The red-orange fruits proliferating in the market are from Lycium chinense or Lycium barbarum, a member of the Solanaceae - the nightshade family. They are a common food item throughout East Asia, the Middle East, and in the Caucasus. In Traditional Chinese Medicine the fruits are used to nourish vital essence, serve as a general tonic, and improve vision. In traditional applications it is used to tonify deficiency of the liver and kidneys. Many traditional prescriptions refer to the herb’s tonic effects.
