Thirty six images of Mahonia bealei or Berberis bealei, Leatherleaf Mahonia or Beale's Barberry is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to forests, weedy slopes, thickets and roadsides from Central and East-central China. First described by European botanists in 1850 (as Berberis bealei) and placed in Mahonia four years later, this Mahonia was introduced into Japanese, European and American horticulture by the mid nineteenth century. Like other members of the genus the bark and root bark are loaded with the bright yellow bioactive alkaloid berberine. It is naturalized in the Southeastern United States.
