Rute graveolens, Rue

Ruta graveolens, Rue native to the Balkan peninsula and Crimea, naturalized in south central Europe. Traditionally, the herb is gathered before it comes into flower. However, gardeners must approach this plant with caution, as it can cause contact dermatitis or photosensitization. The condition looks much like poison ivy rash. This is caused by a photosensitization resulting from a reaction of the furocoumarins in the fresh leaves to sunlight. When the fresh leaves are handled or intentionally rubbed on the skin, followed by exposure to sunlight, the unpleasant rash, can be the result.
